Our Story

Jeff Jones

Owner, Mortician, Funeral Director

In a town with roots reaching back to the early days of Chambers County, Jeff Jones Funeral Home stands as part of LaFayette’s living history. The funeral home is housed in a structure that began as a residential home built in 1840, during a time when LaFayette was still taking shape as a small Southern community. Long before the building became a place of service to grieving families, it stood as a witness to generations of local life, change, hardship, faith, and family.

The funeral home itself began its service to the community on September 1, 1945, when M.R. “Pat” Sanders and his wife, Eula Sanders, opened Johnson Sanders Funeral Home. Coming just after the close of World War II, it was a time when families across the South were rebuilding, returning home, and leaning on their communities more than ever. From the beginning, the Sanders family provided a needed service with care, dignity, and a personal connection to the people of LaFayette and the surrounding area.

On October 19, 1976, Jeff Jones began his apprenticeship and employment at the funeral home. What started as a young man’s calling to serve would become a lifelong commitment to funeral service and to the families of Chambers County. Jeff later attended Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating in 1979. After completing his education, he became a National Board Funeral Director and Embalmer in the State of Alabama and soon took on the responsibility of managing the funeral home.

When Mr. Sanders passed away in August of 1982, Mrs. Eula Sanders continued the operation of the funeral home. That same year, the name was changed to Sanders Funeral Home, continuing the family name and the trusted tradition that had been built over many decades. Mrs. Sanders remained an important part of the funeral home’s story until her passing in 1997.

On November 1, 1998, Jeff Jones purchased the funeral home, and the name was changed to Jeff Jones Funeral Home. By that time, Jeff had already spent more than twenty years serving families through the same funeral home, walking alongside them during some of life’s most difficult moments. His ownership was not the beginning of a new and unfamiliar business, but rather the continuation of a long-standing local tradition with deeper roots and renewed personal commitment.

Today, Jeff Jones Funeral Home continues to serve LaFayette, Chambers County, and the surrounding communities with respect, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the families who place their trust in us. From its historic 1840 structure to its beginnings in 1945, the funeral home remains more than a business. It is part of the fabric of LaFayette, a place where history, service, and community come together.

For generations, families have turned to this funeral home in times of loss. The staff at Jeff Jones Funeral Home is honored to continue that legacy, offering guidance, care, and dignity to each family we serve.
