Mr. Donald Oliver McCarthy, 83, of West Point, Ga. died Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at LaFayette Nursing Home in LaFayette, Ala. Mr. McCarthy was born in Shawmut, Ala. on April 16, 1935, to the late Emmitt McCarthy and the late Bessie Oliver McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy was a graduate of Valley High School and the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in Louisville. For 39 years he owned and operated McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point. As a faithful member of the community, he served the City of West Point as both a volunteer fireman and an EMT for many years. Mr. McCarthy was active in the West Point First United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the Chancel Choir. He also was a former member of the West Point Rotary Club and was honored by the club as a Paul Harris Fellow. One accomplishment from his youth of which he was most proud was achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. McCarthy was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Martha Sue Davis McCarthy. He is survived by a special and loyal friend, Mary Ann Mize of Lanett Ala.; his son and daughter-in-law, Dickie and Martha Lee McCarthy of Sewanee, Tenn.; a grandson, Daniel (Amanda) McCarthy of Mobile, Ala.; a granddaughter, Kelli (Harrison) Camp of Sewanee, Tenn.; a brother, Scotty (Cheryl) McCarthy of Tyrone, Ga.; and six great grandchildren, Drew McCarthy, Ella McCarthy, Lily Camp, Hannah McCarthy, Sadie Camp, and Suzanna Camp.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018, at 2:00 pm EDT at the West Point First United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point, Ga. The Rev. Mark McGee and the Rev. Dr. John Mattox will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the Zachry Center at the West Point First United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 25, 2018, from 6:00-8:00 pm EDT.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chancel Choir at the West Point First United Methodist Church or a charity of one's choice.
